 Parish Council:

   I. Purpose:  The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body to the Pastor. It assists the Pastor in:
                     * Assuring that all aspects of parish life reflect the mission and minstry of Jesus
                     * Providing recommendations for parish priorities and directions through pastoral planning
                     * Promoting collaborative communication and understanding among parish organizations and between the parish, the Diocese, and the universal Church
                     * Forming community as a sign and witness of unity for the large parish community
Parish Council members are challenged to continual renewal through prayer, study, listening, and dialogue. In developing priorities and directions for the parish, the Council is the means for giving everyone a voice in guiding parish life in its mission.  In fostering communication and collaboration, the Council encourages and initiates dialogue among parish leadership and organizations and also reminds them of the concerns of the larger Church. The Council is also a vehicle to informa the Bishop of parish needs and directions that are common to all parishes. This is done through a representative who communicates between the Parish Pastoral Council and the Diocesan Pastoral Council.
Matters of fiscal stewardship such as finance, budgets, buildings and grounds are the concern of the Parish Finance Council.

  II. Observation
                  1. A parish is required to have a parish council (Canon 536)
                  2. The parish council is to meet at least two time a year
                  3. Each parish council meeting is to have a formal agenda and the recording of minutes
                  4. Parish council members should have initial three year terms.  Renewal of membership is at the discretion of the member and the pastor.
                  5. New members should be chosen after a parish invitation has been made to fill an open position
                  6. One member of the finance council should be on the parish council and present an update of parish finances at parish council meetings.
